Default Solutions for a Supporting Wall

I've never actually considered knocking down a supporting wall but the time has come when I need to create an arc in a supporting wall to allow the sun to come through to the front room in the afternoons. What sort of options do I have in terms of how much of the supporting wall I can plan to be knocked down? Say the wall is 15 meters long, could I plan to have 10 meters of that knocked down and the builder will place an iron support in the wall above the opening and it be OK?
