Default Pointing a Wall

Hi, my back yard wall needs pointing again. I'm gunna give it a try myself. I know the basics, but literally, that's it. Is there really anything to it other than scraping out the old plaster and filling in the gaps with new plaster? Also, is there a specific type of plaster I need?

Thanks in advance!

What a coincidence! I am after the same the information. Last time it needed pointing I got my friend to it for me. Except he's been transferred to a company about 15 miles away from where I live so I feel somewhat embarrassed about asking him.

Any help would be much appreciated and greatly received.

Is it an outside or inside wall? Inside, you need to wash it down, fill the nail holes, sand it, wash off any sand dust, prime if necessary (going from a dark color to a light) and then paint. I'm not as sure about outside painting...
