Wink making a trellis

Does anyone know or have any ideas on making a trellis? I have 2 Westerias .We planted them and want to build a trellis or something for them to climb. We were thinking of a half circle type thing made from lattice.

I'm sure there are loads of way of making trellis with hazel branches and the like, but my solution? I'd just pop down to the local DIY shop and see what they have. China seems to be able to mass produce just about anything these days, so I don't see why they couldn't get hold of exactly what you have in mind.

Just my thoughts though...if you really want to go for that 'home-made' look, I'm sure there are loads of people here infinitely more creative and experienced than myself...

Hi!

How would you like that trellis to look? I saw one in a Sunset mags made of branches. It certainly got a rustic look to it. They simply nailed and tied the branches together. Bamboo, tied together to look like a torii gate, would impart a zen-like elegance.

Wink

That sounds really nice, but I need it to look like a horse shoe shape. I have planted 2 Wisterias .Now all I need are something for them to climb. They already have the curling limbs reaching out for something to climb. Can you find a pic of that you were talking about amd post it here or a link where I can see a pic of that .Sounds interesting, maybe be great for a rose bush. What was the trellis made for?

I'll try to leaf through the old mags and scan the pics. I don't exactly know the plant but it's got ivy-like leaves, broad and pointed. Rose bushes, aren't they too heavy? Maybe they can use something more sturdy, like a steel frame.

I would have to say that what you do will depend on the time and money you want to put into it. I think that your half circle idea with lattice is definitely an plan that would work very well. There have also been other suggestions here that I would have mentioned as well but they are already here. Lattice is always my first choice when needing to get something up right away.

I have never made a trellis before, but they do look very nice. I would like to learn to make one as well. What do you recommend for making them. I see that lattice is one material that can be used to make a trellis, but what else would one need or where would someone such as myself be able to find information on building them. I am always open to learning new things.

Default Wisteria Trellis

Here are some links you may find useful. One discusses an alternative to a wisteria trellis, as well.

Making a trellis is actually quite simple. Simply acquire about 16 thin sheets of wood that will bend easily. Ensure they're about 10cms across and then weave them in and out of one another until you get a trellis like pattern.
